Gerena School 'Family Literacy Night' gives parents tips on reading with their children

Carmen Claudio of Springfield has been reading bedtime stories to her great-granddaughters since they were babies, but now she will change up her routine.

"I used to think that reading was just about showing them the book and reading the words, but the teacher showed me that I should involve them more," said Claudio, who attended Gerena School's Family Literacy Night on Wednesday.

The event was an effort to get parents to read to their children on a regular basis, particularly before the third grade. Instilling a love of reading at such an early age can provide children with a foundation for critical thinking and composition skills that they will need all the way through college, according to education experts.
